Hannah and her husband, Luke[/caption]Hannah Rutan is the newest doula to join the Expecting Joy team.  As a graduate from Robert’s Wesleyan College in upstate New York, she has, most recently, been working as an Registered Nurse at Eastside Family Health Center in Kirkland.  During her early education, Hannah supported a few births and instantly knew that her passions were in this line of work.She received her doula training at the Simkin Center/Bastyr University and she considers it a true privilege to work along side families as they prepare for the beauty of bringing a little miracle into this world!Why did you originally want to become a nurse?

It's a blessing to serve, a joy to meet new people, and a passion to make a difference in someone's life-- what better way to do all of this than as a nurse?  I delight in giving assistance for those in need whether physical, emotional, social, or spiritual!

How does being a nurse help you as a doula?

My desire for holistic care as a nurse helps me focus on all aspects of coaching as a doula, not just the physical needs.  Specifically, I'm here to alleviate the more subtle needs of my clients in a season of life that calls for joy and passion with care and warmth.  I'm here to be a calming presence and a listening ear-- to show empathy, advocacy, and education throughout this entire process.

What was your most memorable birth?

Recently, I helped a dear friend through a 38 hour labor.  It was a powerful experience to see how my presence and encouragement helped her and her husband work together as a team!  It was equally rewarding to witness the transformation in their self-esteem as they realized they were going to get through labor & delivery together.What is one piece of advice you give to an expecting mom?

Have confidence in your body's ability to give birth. We were created to experience this wonderful miracle!  I recommend reading Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn by Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley, & Ann Keppler for more information.
